Montague is a moderate size town of over 2150 residents situated at the mouth of the White River on Lake Michigan, twenty miles north of Muskegon . In the 1600’s French fur trappers discovered this area that had long been inhabited by Ottawa and Potawatomi Indians. The settlement began in 1855 when a Nat Sargent built the first house there.
The town was officially incorporated into a village in 1883 and was named after William Montague Ferry, one of the town fathers. It was later incorporated into a city in 1935.
This area developed in the late 1800’s as a major lumber shipping point containing 47 sawmills at one time. Today the area is a large producer of agricultural products, including wheat, corn, dairying, and livestock. Its harbor is full of fishing boats, and water sports are enjoyed here.
The Montague-Whitehall Railroad ran track through both towns and transported lumber up and down the Lake Michigan shore line. Today the tracks have been removed and the old roadbed has been made into a walking and bike path. The old depot has been moved across the river to Whitehall and is used by their Chamber of Commerce.
Montague is situated on a hill overlooking the marina, White River Channel, and its sister city, Whitehall , just across the lake. It has a City Hall, Post Office, stores, hotels, and several churches, etc. The zip code here is 49437. Some of the old brick buildings are mixed in with newer structures. It has a very appealing entrance with a very pleasant park, etc. Nice homes are situated on the rolling hills throughout town. Tourism, some local manufacturing and its location as a commuter city to Muskegon support Montague’s economy.
