Montague Township, Ontario, Canada

Montague Township , with a population of about 3800, is an area within the County of Lanark .  It can be found near Smiths Falls , southwest of Ottawa , Ontario and eighteen miles south of Carleton Place .  It is situated along the Rideau Canal System and is a bedroom community for Smith Falls and Ottawa .  The main settlement is the Village of Numogate followed by the hamlets of Nolans Corners, Rosedale, and Kilmarnock .

Montague was surveyed in the 1790’s and was intended to accommodate the Loyalist settlers.  The area continued to attract settlers in the post 1812 decades.  Many Caucasian people were settling along the Rideau River , however, it was the mass Irish emigration of the 1830’s to 1850’s that gave the township its distinctive ethnic character.  The frontier settlements grew slowly with wheat and later dairy farming being the primary substance of living for its inhabitants.

Poor soil conditions along with social and ethnic problems contributed to the decline of the Township.  Montague’s population declined between 1860 and 1940.  The adjacent towns, such as Smiths Falls , continued to prosper and grow to the downfall of the Township.

The ATV trail, shown above, leads to the old Montague Rd. in this once more populated area.
