Montague Island, Virginia

A few miles south of Laneview on Highway 17, near Jamaica , we visited Montague Island .  It is some land that juts out into the Rappahannock River , separated by a marsh, but is considered an Island anyway.  The Island is quite wooded with mostly rural residences there.  The road comes to an end, so one must return the same way.  The Peter Montague family owned this land, or island, for many generations.

Peter, son of Peter Montague of Boveney, Parish of Burnham, Buckinghamshire , England , came to America on the “Charles” in 1621.  He is an older brother to Richard, who went to the New England area in the 1630’s.  I am sure that all the places named Montague, in Virginia , were named after Peter’s family, but I will leave that history to a Peter Montague descendant.  Robert Montague, in near-by Urbanna, is a descendant living in the area.
